Making waves on the Interstate and airwaves.
It’s no secret that there has been a rumbling of and through a fraternal organization called the TR(Towing & Recovery) Rode Knytes Association, that on the surface goes by the handle of the Hazzard County Toewing Association(towing mis-spelled on purpose). The Hazzard County Toewing Association, has been busting butt for the last 10 years to bring to fruition the only nationwide radio show for those of us who toew(mis-spelled on purpose).
Started on the outskirts of the tiny town(still is) of Hagerman(aka-Hazzard)Idaho, in 1984 radio station KTOW FM 89.1 went on the air. The popularity of what we were doing spread like a desert brush fire. To other ends of the surface transportation industry. Truckers both short and long haul were tuning in. Gearheads of all sorts tuned in, from bikers to RV’ers tuned in. Of course then came multiple set backs from deaths in the association of officers, to financial declines, to my redeployment in the USMC.
Finally discharged in 2006, the Hazzard County Toewing Association was in somewhat of disarray. But determination and long nights, between toewing pursuits, has brought us to the starting line, of gaining altitude serving the man or woman trying to make and keep a buck driving a toew truck.
You can’t be the voice of an industry unless your part or actively involved in an industry. As for me I’ve been involved in toewing. Starting with a sharp looking Chevy one ton with Holmes 500, on back to 20 trucks in both Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming, from Heavy Hooker Wrecker Service, to Highway Hooker Towing to Dixie Towing, and now with the addition of both BlackSheep and SpeedWrench Towing of the Mountain West, my tiny company has blossomed beyond the dreams I dreamed as a teen.
Our organization started due to the frustrations of high dues, and little real influence in government policy matters as they related to toewing, to no representation of our rural style tow companies, owned by many independents, both mid sized as well as small one to two truck operations.
TRAA and other were not interested. Insulted at a major TRAA event in 1984, I and 5 in Idaho, and 5 in Utah industry professionals got together at Warrens Burgers in Roy Utah. This was 2005. By the fall of 2005 entering 2006, the Hazzard County Toewing Association, was reformed.
We knew that to be taken seriously, we had to do things differently.
Sitting in my house in Bountiful Utah at the time, the Blue Collar Comedy Tour special was on TV. The way they spelled the on show country bar Rode House, looked good. Some rework and the TR Rode Knytes(knights)Association was formed officially in 2006. Divorce occurred, I was miserable I needed a change of environment. Moved back here to Idaho, leaving my company’s Utah subsidiary in the good hands of Tommy Pistone, I rebuilt my own company.
In 2008 what had been a custom big rig truck club,(Knytes-of-Anarchy) that I am part of adopted the Rode Knytes, and the task of finally bringing to the over the airwaves the first and only true radio station for and of us in toewing, was undertaken.
Getting an FCC license, finding allocation from the FCC to put a radio station and all takes time. Then there was the frustration of finding in studio talent. The male only gigs like mine(Highway Hooker Radio) could and is hosted or manned by off duty toewing professional members of the Rode Knytes. That said the need to bring in female talent both for ad sales and on air was the difficulty. Still is. That said, between May 1st to June 1st 2012 finally, KTOW as a fully legal, full powered FM radio station along with sister AM station KDXB(formerly KBAR) 1230 Heyburn / Burley Idaho signs on the air. Remember we are and have been toewing media long b4 toewing was cool. So why would this be interesting to those outside of the Mountain West of America?
As an organization there is ongoing negotiations with XM/Sirius to get Highway Hooker Radio on the open road channel. More over to get a channel on XM Sirius for us in toewing.
Now for the question many are asking.
Why spell the word TOW as TOE or a combination? In 1997 I was doing overnight duty on air at then KEMK in Utah, we ran what was then called the Overdrive Magazine’s syndicated radio shows, the Overdrive Top Ten Countdown/Overdrive Truckers News. We had country music legend Bill Mack do some promo’s for Highway Hooker Radio. He kept pronouncing the word TOW like cow. Going further, there was a particular newspaper style publication out called PhooteNotes, later retitled and ran by our good friends at TR Footnotes. Again bringing in the word tow as toe. Furthering this in 2009, at our production company in Gooding, Idaho, our in studio sex therapist Emme, said why not just combine the words, Tow-Toe and make toew. So it goes.
More L8R Thursday. Its snow and blowing, that means toewing.
Hope to get some trade ink on this in TR FootNotes.
Until L8R ya’ll
